A dramatic call came in on Sunday afternoon, 12 April, shortly after 4:00 p.m. It concerned a young roe deer buck that had fallen into a deep depression on the grounds of the ruins of a former chemical plant. The animal was unable to get out on its own.
When the services arrived, they quickly confirmed the seriousness of the situation. The fawn was at the bottom of a pit approximately four metres deep. It was clearly weakened, and its condition indicated a possible injury—there was a suspicion that its front limb was broken.
The officers immediately took action. Thanks to an efficient and coordinated operation, the animal was safely brought out of the depression. Every minute mattered.
After being freed, the animal was placed in the care of specialists from the “Klekusiowo” Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre. There, it received the necessary veterinary care and has a chance to recover.
The entire situation is another example of the dangers that abandoned and unsecured areas created by humans pose to wild animals. Deep excavations, ruins and manholes often become deadly traps from which animals are unable to escape.
The services emphasise the enormous importance of a quick response from witnesses. Bolesławiec firefighters:
