As the Ministry of Energy wrote on the social media platform X:
We keep our promises and protect Polish families’ budgets from increases caused by the global crisis in the fuel market. Starting tomorrow, thanks to the actions of the Polish government, all drivers will be able to refuel considerably more cheaply.
How much will we pay for fuel at most?
According to the ministry’s statement, prices at filling stations should not exceed levels close to current market forecasts.
Maximum retail fuel prices on 31 March:
- Pb95 petrol: PLN 6.16 per litre,
- Pb98 petrol: PLN 6.76 per litre,
- diesel fuel: PLN 7.60 per litre.
The government says these levels reflect the current market situation and are intended to prevent further, uncontrolled price increases at filling stations.
Minister: “this is the upper limit”
The statement emphasises that the rates indicated should be treated as maximum permitted retail prices. In this way, the authorities want to limit the risk of speculative increases that could place an additional burden on drivers and businesses.
Severe consequences for filling stations
The Ministry of Energy is announcing decisive action against stations that fail to comply with the new regulations. Selling fuel above the established limits may result in:
- high financial penalties (up to several hundred thousand zlotys),
- inspections and administrative proceedings,
- in extreme cases, revocation of the licence to trade in fuels.
Inspections are to be carried out on a large scale, and drivers will be able to report irregularities to the relevant institutions.
Intervention in a difficult market
The introduction of price limits is part of a broader trend observed in Europe, where governments are responding to rising fuel prices through various forms of market regulation. For now, the new regulations are temporary, but whether they remain in force will depend on the situation in global oil and fuel markets.
