An unknown perpetrator tore down and broke the children’s and teenagers’ artwork from the art studio that had been attached to the fence of the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury (MDK). Sixteen panels hung on the roadside-facing side were destroyed.
“It’s enough to make your hands drop,” says MDK director Dariusz Uścinski, who reported the incident to the police. “How could the children’s work have bothered anyone? Someone must have made an effort to tear it down and break it. I’m speechless. The gallery was created to mark the 70th anniversary of the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury. We were just about to replace the work on the boards. The boards were expensive because they were intended for repeated use and, above all, to last a long time. I estimate the damage at approximately PLN 6,000,” the director adds.
Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury in Bolesławiec launched the “Gallery on the Fence” initiative in autumn 2024. The MDK fence displayed unique works created by participants in art classes led by Katarzyna Sas and Joanna Mysłek-Michowską.
The talented young people’s works were a distinction for their authors and blended into the city street landscape. The vivid colours and diverse motifs on the fence enlivened the urban space and encouraged residents to engage more closely with art presented in a public place.
