The merger of two county hospitals has sparked considerable controversy. On February 26, 2026, councillors from Zgorzelec County voted by a majority in favour of merging the county hospitals in Bolesławiec and Zgorzelec, but councillors from Bolesławiec still had many questions. Financial and employment matters remained unclear. There is also no information on how patients will benefit from the merger of the hospitals.

“I am very surprised by how sudden this is,” says KO councillor Radosław Palczewski. “As recently as last Thursday, there was talk of proceeding calmly and of documents being provided to the councillors. A joint meeting of the council committees was supposed to be convened. But here, a session has suddenly been called. Only two working days have passed since the February session. Even the social council at the ZOZ has not yet given its final opinion on the planned merger. It is difficult to call this acting in good faith. Someone very much wants the merger to become a fact, regardless of everything,” the councillor adds.

At the County Council session on February 26, Kamil Barczyk, director of the hospital in Bolesławiec, presented a strategy for consolidating the Bolesławiec facility with the Multispecialist Hospital – Health Care Complex in Zgorzelec.

“For me, there are no objections, because I reviewed the financial situation of both hospitals. The situation is clear to me, and I will vote in favour,” says councillor Wojciech Kasprzyk (a councillor who joined the council from the Third Way).

We do not know how the councillors will vote.
