In recent days, German newsrooms have focused on plans to build a permanent American military base in Poland, referred to in the public debate as “Fort Trump”, and in particular on the location of this project in Bolesławiec in Lower Silesia—a city previously better known for ceramics than for NATO strategy.
Although Bolesławiec is listed as the base’s location in many Polish and foreign publications, we already know that the agreement between Poland and the USA concerns the Żagań training area in a broad sense, together with several military complexes in the region (including Bolesławiec), while the key investments—including the US Armored Brigade Combat Team base—have nevertheless been assigned to Świętoszów.
We explained this in detail in the article: American base near Bolesławiec? The agreement clearly indicates: the center is in Świętoszów, not in the city
Bolesławiec in German publications
A few weeks ago, a team from the German television network ARD visited Bolesławiec. Following the visit, reports on the subject appeared in the German media. The website of the German public broadcaster ARD, in cooperation with Deutsche Welle, presents “Fort Trump” as a project that has long featured in Polish strategic debate, but remains largely conceptual and political. The German journalist describes Bolesławiec as a “pretty, rather sleepy town known for ceramics production,” which could gain new momentum from the presence of a larger number of American soldiers.
The article indicates that Bolesławiec residents and local authorities view the project to build a new base positively. They see both economic benefits and a security component in it—it was emphasized that the existing presence of American soldiers has already contributed to the development of local restaurants and services. The author quotes the mayor of Bolesławiec, who points out that the United States is seen by many residents as the most important partner in ensuring geopolitical security.
Political tensions and growing skepticism toward the USA
However, German media also draw attention to significant friction in Polish-American relations. The ARD publication emphasized that although Poland readily speaks about military cooperation with the USA, in practice this cooperation is not free of political tensions. The article cites examples of critical attitudes among Polish politicians from the ruling coalition toward US administration initiatives, such as refusing to support a nomination or criticizing the concept of the Board of Peace proposed by President Donald Trump.
What is more, according to German journalists, Poles’ sympathies toward the USA are beginning to decline—in the cited poll, trust in the United States reached a record low. According to commentators, this may affect how the “Fort Trump” project is perceived socially and politically.
The debate over the name and symbolism of Fort Trump
The debate over the name “Fort Trump” itself is also being discussed in Germany. This term, which is used in Poland’s public debate, is viewed by some commentators as an element of political rhetoric intended to win favor with the US authorities or a particular president. German media quote Polish politicians who describe such naming as “sycophancy” toward Washington—criticizing such measures as unnecessary or too submissive toward the ally.
The broader strategic context
In German media analyses, Fort Trump is also often viewed in the broader context of European security policy. Newsrooms emphasize that Poland—due to its history and geopolitical position—may see a permanent American presence as a key element of deterrence, especially in view of growing tensions with Russia.
At the same time, commentators from Germany point to controversies connected with the political aspects of this presence, such as potential costs, issues of national sovereignty, or the impact on European-American relations.
German conclusions
In German media, developments surrounding the planned military base in Bolesławiec—referred to in Polish debate as “Fort Trump”—are presented as a complex mix of enthusiasm, skepticism, and placement within the broader context of European security.
German commentary highlights both potential economic and strategic benefits, as well as political risks and disputes connected with the name and significance of the project.
