Five police officers from the SPPP in Legnica, who had finished their shift in Zgorzelec on February 2, were returning to their city when they came across a serious road accident on the A4 motorway. A van had collided with a truck there. – Staff Sergeant Michał Hajgenbart, Senior Sergeant Rafał Jakubowski, Sergeant Krzysztof Kaleta, Sergeant Jacek Stępniak and Constable Patryk Sitnicki immediately began providing first aid and securing the scene – says Staff Sergeant Monika Kaleta from the Press Section of the Wrocław Provincial Police Headquarters.
She adds: – Initial findings indicated that the van driver had most likely, for unknown reasons and at high speed, driven straight into the truck travelling in front of him and hit its trailer.
The officers immediately activated their emergency signals and began assisting the injured van driver. The man was conscious, but did not remember the incident, was unable to speak coherently and most of all complained of a headache.
The officers provided the man with psychological comfort and protected him from the cold by covering him with a blanket. They also dressed the wound on his head and transferred the injured man to the police car because of the very low temperature outside.
Police officers from the Bolesławiec station, who had been notified earlier, arrived at the scene together with a medical rescue crew and a fire engine dispatched to the site.

Until they arrived, the officers from the SPPP in Legnica provided first aid to the van driver, identified witnesses to the road accident and secured the scene until the arrival of the other emergency services. Fortunately, the truck driver did not require medical assistance and was also able to describe the course of this serious-looking accident.

Road conditions are difficult. Due to low temperatures, snow cover or ice, travelling on the roadway is somewhat more challenging and requires maximum concentration from us. Sometimes we overestimate our abilities and forget that it is simply WINTER. When it is winter, road conditions deteriorate significantly as well. Let us remember to adjust the way we drive not only to the road signs, but also to the conditions prevailing on the road.
