This is a unique project that will not only make it possible to build a safe cycling route, but will also make cycling recreation more attractive, encourage residents to spend their leisure time actively and further promote the tourist and natural assets of the gmina.

– For many years, Gromadka Gmina had been seeking the opportunity to build a cycling path along the former railway track through Modła and Gromadka towards Borówki, and then towards Trzebień – says Mayor Ryszard Kawka. – This will be a section of the cycling route forming part of the major Lower Silesian Cyklostrada project, connecting the so-called “Copper Route” with the cycling route of the Bóbr Valley – the local government official explains.

The contractor for the project is JAGIELSKI Spółka Komandytowa. The lump-sum remuneration for carrying out the contract is PLN 8,450,100.00 gross.

The completion date was set for 15 September 2026.

Gromadka’s historic agreement with PKP

On 1 December 2025, Gromadka Gmina Mayor Ryszard Kawka signed a notarial deed with PKP concerning plots connected with the former railway line no. 314 from Bolesławiec (Bunzlau Kleinbahnhof) to Modła (Modlau Kleinbahnhof), which was opened 112 years ago.

The deed enabled ownership of the land to be transferred for the implementation of the gmina’s key undertaking, which is intended to transform the local transport and recreation landscape, facilitate further design work and progress, and eliminate legal barriers connected with using the land for the path.

On 5 December 2025, the mayor also signed a contract for construction works and related activities under the project entitled: “Construction of a cycling path in Gromadka Gmina”.

This part of the plan is another step towards creating a recreational and transport network that will connect the villages and enable people to discover the region’s ecological assets. In practice, this means greater safety for cyclists, new cycling routes for residents and tourists, and a boost for the local tourism market.

– The project’s main objective is to develop sustainable cycling tourism and tourist traffic by providing access to high-quality infrastructure – explains Ryszard Kawka. – The project will equip Gromadka Gmina with a safe, high-standard cycling path that can be used by cyclists from our gmina and by tourists. Since the completed path will connect with cycling routes being developed in Lower Silesia, the result will be increased cycling and tourist traffic. The path will also give our residents the opportunity to use cycling routes directly in our region and, in the future, throughout Lower Silesia, neighbouring voivodeships and routes outside Poland in the Czech Republic and Germany – the mayor says about the project.

Lower Silesian Cyklostrada is an ambitious project improving transport convenience and accessibility in the Lower Silesia region. The project envisages integrating local cycling paths with the regional railway network. The new routes being built will be safe, functional and friendly to both users and the natural environment.

Ultimately, Lower Silesian Cyklostrada is to become an attractive tourism product, enabling visitors to explore the entire voivodeship by bicycle in all directions. Each route offers a range of interesting tourist attractions and places worth seeing, such as the railway line section in Domaniów, known from the TV series “Four Tank-Men and a Dog”. Through the development of cycling infrastructure, the project promotes an active lifestyle and sustainable tourism in the region.

– This is a project serving residents, tourists and the environment, and it is becoming a reality – says Marshal Paweł Gancarz. – As the regional government, we are developing not only roads and railways but also cycling infrastructure. Together with Deputy Marshals Michał Rado and Tymoteusz Myrda, and Mateusz Masłowski, director of the Lower Silesian Roads and Railways Service, we are working on the next stages of building Cyklostrada, a coherent and safe network of cycling routes that will connect all of Lower Silesia – the marshal adds.

The almost 13-kilometre cycling route (12,919.08 m) of Cyklostrada in Gromadka Gmina will be bidirectional. The project provides for a 2.5-metre-wide path with shoulders on both sides.

Moreover, a 3.0-metre-wide shared pedestrian and cycling path with shoulders will be built in Gromadka. The path will be properly marked with road and tourist signs. This project is a significant investment in infrastructure aimed at improving the safety and comfort of road users.

History of the railway line from 1913

County railway line no. 314 was opened on 20 December 1913 and connected Bolesławiec with Modła. Passenger trains ran on the line until 1961, while freight traffic continued on some sections until 2000.

In 1935, together with the Bolesławiec Wschód–Nowa Wieś Grodziska line, it formed an important part of the local transport infrastructure. Its technical facilities were located in Bolesławiec Wschód.

The company employed 119 people and had a rolling stock fleet consisting of six steam locomotives, two mail and luggage cars, 15 passenger cars and 53 freight cars.

Later, the rolling stock was expanded by two railcars. In the 1970s, as a result of the reorganisation of line numbering, the method of calculating distances was changed, using Bolesławiec station as the reference point. The Bolesławiec Wschód–Podg BC1 section was converted into a connecting track and assigned number 777. After line 314 was closed, the Bolesławiec–BC1–Wizów Chemical Works siding was created and assigned number 973.
