Update
Bolesławiec police on the further course of the case:
Officers from the Traffic Division of the Bolesławiec police headquarters detained a 32-year-old man apprehended in the Nowogrodziec municipality by Road Transport Inspection officers during a roadside check. The Lithuanian citizen was driving a truck combination while intoxicated. The test showed 0.7 per mille of alcohol in his system.
Verdict has been issued
The suspect was brought before the court under an accelerated procedure, where he received a sentence that included, among other things, a three-year ban on driving motor vehicles, as well as an obligation to pay PLN 5,000 to the Fund for Assistance to Victims and Post-Penitentiary Assistance.
The incident occurred on 17 November. While escorting a truck stopped for inspection at a roundabout on provincial road 296, inspectors from the Jelenia Góra branch of the Lower Silesian Road Transport Inspection stopped another vehicle belonging to a Lithuanian carrier. Road Transport Inspection:
After the inspectors gave the appropriate signals, the truck followed the Road Transport Inspection service vehicle.
The driver did not intend to submit to the inspection, however. He turned into a petrol station and hid in one of its buildings.
Officials:
The inspectors did not give up and, after several minutes, located the insubordinate driver and proceeded with the inspection. A breathalyzer test showed more than 0.7 per mille of alcohol in the exhaled air.
They add:
What is particularly alarming is that the driver had been driving for several hours after a weekend of drinking alcohol. Thanks to the inspectors’ vigilance, the potentially tragic consequences of an intoxicated “driver” traveling along one of Poland’s busiest routes were once again prevented.
The man was handed over to the police, who are carrying out further activities in the case. Driving while intoxicated is punishable by up to three years in prison.
