The District Prosecutor’s Office in Lubin opened an investigation on October 7 into the course of a police intervention that took place the same day, at around 5 a.m., involving a 41-year-old man who, in an agitated state, was walking through the streets of Lubin holding a hammer and an axe.
– Following a report received by the Lubin police station from a city resident, an employee of a local-government institution, and a notification from the man’s former partner that he had made threats against her the previous day, police officers intervened and detained the man using direct coercive measures – Liliana Łukasiewicz of the Legnica Regional Prosecutor’s Office reports. – Due to the man’s state of agitation, an ambulance was called to the scene. The man died while receiving medical assistance.
The prosecutor was immediately notified of the incident and personally inspected the scene. At the prosecutor’s direction, evidence in the form of recordings from surveillance cameras and a private phone was secured. An eyewitness and other people with knowledge of the case were also questioned without delay.
Spokesperson: In view of the circumstances of the incident, the prosecutor decided to open an investigation to determine whether, on October 7, 2025, in Lubin, at the intersection of Pawia, Wyszyńskiego and Orla streets, the officers of the District Police Headquarters in Lubin possibly exceeded their powers and whether the death of the above-mentioned man occurred as a result of the intervention.
An autopsy of the man will be conducted on October 9 at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Wrocław to determine the immediate cause of death. Toxicological and histopathological tests will also be carried out, with the results expected in several weeks. Among other things, they will establish whether the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The 41-year-old had previously been convicted several times of offenses against life and health, including causing bodily injury, making criminal threats and drug possession.
The investigation is ongoing.
