On Saturday, officers from the Zgorzelec traffic police noticed the driver of a BMW who was travelling at excessive speed and violating traffic regulations. – When the officers attempted to measure his speed, the BMW driver began accelerating and overtaking using the emergency lane – reports Superintendent Agnieszka Goguł, press officer for the District Police Commander in Zgorzelec. – The police then decided to stop him for a traffic check. However, he ignored the visual and audible signals ordering him to stop and began fleeing.
His speed reached as much as 200 km/h in a built-up area and as much as 240 km/h outside built-up areas. During the pursuit, the BMW driver performed an improper overtaking manoeuvre and struck the rear of an Audi. The Audi then moved into the opposite lane, causing a collision with a Mercedes. The spokeswoman: – After the collision, the BMW was thrown into the air and overturned, coming to a stop only after 170 metres.
The police officers immediately began rescue efforts. One of them secured the BMW driver, while the other ran to provide assistance to those injured in the Audi and Mercedes. A moment later, an off-duty firefighter arrived at the scene and joined the rescue operation.
As a result of the incident, three people were taken to hospital. The BMW driver turned out to be a 19-year-old resident of Karkonosze County who did not have a driving licence. He was also wanted to be taken to a youth educational centre.
The BMW driver will now answer for his actions before the court. Police:
Recklessness and disregard for traffic regulations, driving at excessive speed, without a licence and attempting to flee a traffic stop endanger not only the driver’s life but also the lives of other road users. We therefore appeal for common sense and compliance with the regulations, which are the basic condition of road safety.
