Construction of a new facility at St. Luke’s Hospital is underway. As explained by the facility’s director, Kamil Barczyk, the new ward is intended for elderly and chronically ill people who require a longer hospital stay. “We have planned 70 beds, a kitchen with a hospital restaurant, living facilities, as well as a conference and lecture room for staff education on 2,600 m²,” the director emphasizes.

The new building is to become a central place for patients and their families. It will include an information desk which, as Barczyk points out, will significantly facilitate communication throughout the hospital.

The investment is intended for long-term stays, lasting from several weeks to even several months. Reducing symptoms and improving patients’ quality of life should enable them to return home. “We want our patients to be able to function normally in their home environment again after rehabilitation and medical care,” says the hospital director.

The new ward will provide round-the-clock medical and nursing care, as well as specialized rehabilitation. “The medical profile of hospitalization will be significantly more advanced than in residential care homes,” Barczyk explains.

Patients’ stays will be financed by the National Health Fund. Patients will bear only minimal costs for living expenses – several dozen złoty per month, most often deducted from their pension or disability benefit.

Doctors will qualify patients for admission to the facility based on the Barthel Index. The age of adult patients will not matter; only medical considerations will count.

The investment is being carried out thanks to funds from the National Recovery Plan (PLN 20 million) and the budget of Bolesławiec County (PLN 5 million). The total value of the project is PLN 25 million. As the hospital director emphasizes, such substantial support would not have been possible without the involvement of European Union funds.
