The railway revolution in Lower Silesia is going strong, and Koleje Dolnośląskie have not yet said their final word. New trains and additional routes will appear in Lower Silesia over the coming months.
7 August 2025 is a very important date in the history of Koleje Dolnośląskie. On that day, the 150-millionth passenger travelled aboard a regional carrier’s train.
– 150 million passengers is a symbol of the trust that Lower Silesians place in Koleje Dolnośląskie. It is also confirmation that our investments in modern railways are producing tangible results and genuinely improving the quality of transport for residents across the region. We consistently focus on developing transport and are not slowing down! – says Paweł Gancarz, Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
In 2009, the first year of Koleje Dolnośląskie’s operations, the yellow-and-white trains carried just under 335,000 passengers. It took only ten years for that figure to exceed 14 million annually. The record year in this respect was 2024, when more than 22.5 million travellers boarded KD trains.
– Lower Silesia is now the leader in railway investment in Poland. No other voivodeship is developing its railways as efficiently as we are. In six years, we have restored train services for more than 200,000 Lower Silesians, and places such as Chocianów, Świeradów-Zdrój and Karpacz have returned to the railway map. We are fulfilling our promises – revitalising lines and restoring trains where there had been none for decades – says Michał Rado, Deputy Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
Thanks to local-government and state investments worth nearly PLN 2 billion, the yellow-and-white trains have returned after decades, among other places, to Lubin, Chocianów, Sobótka, Bielawa, Trzebnica, Świeradów-Zdrój, Mirsk and Karpacz. These are important places on the map of Lower Silesia.
– We are pleased that millions of passengers have chosen Koleje Dolnośląskie as their everyday means of transport. It is a tremendous source of pride for us, but also motivation for further development. This result is the best proof that trust in KD is growing and that the comfort and quality of the journeys we offer meet the expectations of Lower Silesians and tourists visiting our region – said Damian Stawikowski, President of Koleje Dolnośląskie.
Koleje Dolnośląskie is a regional railway carrier operating in three, and soon four, voivodeships, also crossing Poland’s borders with the Czech Republic and Germany. Its fleet consists of 88 vehicles, and the contracts currently signed with the Bydgoszcz-based train manufacturer PESA will mean that the fleet grows by another 30 trains in the coming years – 20 five-car electric vehicles and 10 two-car eco-diesels.
Koleje Dolnośląskie operates the fastest regional connections in Poland, occupying three of the top positions among connections between voivodeship capitals and the largest cities in their respective voivodeships. The fastest connections in Poland run from Wrocław to Legnica and Lubin, while the third-fastest connection is in the Lubusz Voivodeship, on the Zielona Góra — Nowa Sól route, also served by this carrier’s white-and-yellow trains.
