Damian, a resident of Bolesławiec, has made an unusual request to the city authorities through us. He wants the trees growing along Rynek Street to be removed. The reason? Birds whose droppings soil parked cars. In his opinion, the current situation discourages visitors and does not serve the city’s image.

– Cars parked in the courtyards of the Market Square are constantly covered in bird droppings. The current situation definitely discourages tourists from visiting – Damian writes.

It is difficult not to notice the problem. Every driver knows how troublesome it can be to clean a car after an “air raid” by a bird squadron. But is cutting down trees the only solution?

At a time when cities around the world are fighting the so-called concrete sprawl, while the climate is changing at an alarming pace, every tree in an urban space is hugely important. Trees provide shade, relief from the heat on hot days, produce oxygen and... are home to birds. Maybe instead of getting rid of greenery, it would be worth considering other methods?

Many cities are introducing alternative solutions: special nets protecting parking spaces, sonic deterrents, nesting boxes in other locations, or restrictions on parking beneath tree canopies. Perhaps this is an option worth considering here as well?

What do you think?

Is cutting down the trees the right step, or would it be better to find a way to reconcile birds, drivers and urban greenery? We invite you to discuss this in the comments.
