Update
Kazimierz Łomotowski, director of the Municipal Housing Management Facility:
All maintenance work and tree removals are carried out on the basis of recommendations resulting from dendrological inspections, which are conducted regularly—twice a year. During the inspection carried out in April 2025, one tree—an oak—was designated for removal, while the other was recommended for heavy sanitary pruning at a height of approximately 3 metres above the fork, in order to restore the tree’s stability. The work was carried out on 7–8 July this year.
The removal was carried out on the basis of Decision No. 103/2025 of 21 May 2025, issued by the Bolesławiec County Office. The trees covered by the decision had previously been repeatedly monitored and maintained in accordance with dendrological recommendations. During one of the first inspections, the presence of a dry branch and bracket fungus fruiting bodies was noted, suggesting that the tree’s condition had deteriorated. In subsequent years, maintenance pruning and checks of the trees’ health were carried out.
At the same time as the inspection, a specialist examination was carried out to determine whether the trees designated for removal or pruning were inhabited by protected organisms, in accordance with the applicable nature protection regulations.
Will there be compensatory plantings? The director: – Compensatory plantings are being carried out at the cemetery, currently near the newly built columbaria. Along the cemetery’s main avenue, 29 oaks have been planted, including 6 this year.
He also emphasises: – It is important to us to preserve the cemetery’s green character while ensuring visitors’ safety and protecting the infrastructure.
At the beginning of last week, a reader called us with the following information: “They’re cutting down beautiful oaks at the cemetery—fresh, brand-new ones, one after another.”
He added that when he looked at the trunk of one of the felled trees, there “wasn’t even a hole” in it.
On Tuesday, 8 July, we asked MZGM about the matter. We have not received a response so far.
