Ongoing talks on rebuilding the railway connection between Gubin and Lubsko, as reported by naszemiasto.pl, are another example showing that local governments, officials and parliamentarians are taking concrete action to restore local railway routes. In Lubusz Voivodeship, much is now being said about rebuilding railway lines that just a few decades ago were an important part of the region’s transport network.

The aforementioned Lubsko–Gubin section, although currently impassable, has a chance to serve passengers again. Concrete discussions, analyses and interest from various levels of administration are emerging in the background. This proves that restoring railway connections is possible when local communities and authorities become involved.

What about Zielona Góra–Jelenia Góra?

In this context, it is worth asking: why not consider connecting Zielona Góra with Jelenia Góra via Żagań, Nowogrodziec and Lwówek Śląski? Such a route would have not only transport but also tourism value. In addition, unlike many forgotten sections, railway infrastructure in the Żagań and Bolesławiec regions largely already exists, and residents have access to regular passenger services. This is not an area forgotten by the railway, but rather one that could be used as a natural link between two voivodeships.

From Zielona Góra’s perspective—the capital of Lubusz Voivodeship—a connection with Lower Silesia via Żagań, Nowogrodziec and Lwówek Śląski would open up new transport opportunities. Currently, travelling from Zielona Góra to Jelenia Góra requires transfers and often takes a route via Wrocław. Meanwhile, a route through the southern edges of the voivodeship could shorten travel time and help develop smaller towns that are currently not well connected to one another.

An Opportunity for Peripheral Regions

In an era of the growing importance of public transport, efforts to combat transport exclusion and concern for the environment, such initiatives make sense. Especially when they are based on existing infrastructure and residents’ real needs. The restoration of railway connections, as in the case of Gubin and Lubsko, shows that where there is a will, a way appears—literally and figuratively.

Time for Concrete Action?

Perhaps local-government officials from Lower Silesia and Lubusz Voivodeship should also begin talks about a potential Zielona Góra–Jelenia Góra route. Perhaps it is local leaders who will determine whether the dream of a convenient, environmentally friendly and fast connection across southwestern Poland becomes a reality.
