On Sunday, 27 March, a theatrical celebration was held at the Stanisław Wyspiański Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury in Bolesławiec. The theatre festival began with a performance by the Teatrzyk Świetliki from Parowa entitled “The Ant and the Grasshopper”. The production was directed by Alicja Drozd.

Then everyone gathered at the Galeria Zdolnych watched “There Is Nothing to Fear”, directed by Katarzyna Pranić. The performance about overcoming childhood fears was presented by Teatrzyk Wyspa Szkrabów. “I based it primarily on texts by Danuta Wawiłow and Dorota Geller. I decided to offer young audiences something new,” the director says.

The second part of the Theatre Day celebrations opened with “Calling Summer”, performed by the Grupa Działań Twórczych “Skins”. The group was formed during the February “On First-Name Terms with Theatre” workshops, led at the MDK by actors from the Ogólnopolski Teatr William-Es (more on this subject in the article On First-Name Terms with Theatre).

Next, actors from Wrocław’s Teatr Sztampa presented the play “Duszno” in the Bolesławiec MDK auditorium. As they wrote on their Facebook profile, “Duszno” is “a performance with a soul, a spoken performance, full of words, supported by words. […] In this performance, words and words are essential. And, besides that, more words”.

The group Sakura Marginis, which has existed since 2009, also performed before the audience. Viewers watched “Four Mirrors”, combining elements of butoh dance, acting improvisation and excellent music. The celebrations concluded with a performance by the Garuda fire theatre.

“Once again, we organised celebrations for International Theatre Day. This event fits perfectly into the mission of this institution,” says Marek Łętowski, head of the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury. “I am also pleased that next year’s celebrations will already take place on the stage of the Teatr Stary.”

“Teatr Sztampa and the Garuda and Sakura Marginis groups contacted us themselves. They simply wanted to present themselves to the audience. This is living proof that young people need contact with theatre,” continues the MDK director. “This year’s address for International Theatre Day was entitled ‘Theatre as a Need for Many’ by Krystyna Janda. Her wish is for theatrical art to cease being elitist and become necessary to many people. We support this wish.
