– Wanted under an arrest warrant, a red Interpol notice and a European Arrest Warrant, 51-year-old Rafał Z. has been charged with taking part in a murder that occurred on 5 August 2003 – reports Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra. She explains:
For 22 years, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra had been searching for him in connection with an investigation in which he is suspected of taking part in a murder—together with and in agreement with three other people, already convicted by final judgments.
The incident occurred on 5 August 2003 at one of the wholesalers’ warehouses in Jelenia Góra. The perpetrators fired several shots from a firearm at the warehouse owner, causing extensive injuries that resulted in his death. The spokesperson: – After the crime, Rafał Z. fled Poland and hid in various countries, frequently changing his place of residence and using false personal details.
The perpetrator was arrested in Spain. At the time of his arrest, he claimed to be a Romanian citizen.
On 20 May 2025, the Spanish authorities temporarily surrendered the suspect to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra so that procedural activities could be carried out with his participation. Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska:
A prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra charged him with taking part, together and in agreement with other persons convicted by final judgments, in the murder. The suspect did not plead guilty to the crime with which he was charged. He refused to give explanations.
The court remanded Z. in custody for three months. The man could face life imprisonment.
