Last week, a Reader wrote to us:

Around 30 old but healthy trees were cut down at the entrance to Kraśnik from the direction of Nowa Wieś. Some of the trees had trunks one and a half metres in diameter.

She added: “The avenue of these alders stretches towards Nowa Wieś. The trees are excellent filters for the rural air, so polluted by smoky chimneys and the nearby motorway. They remove carbon dioxide from it and produce life-giving oxygen!”

As Gmina Bolesławiec explains:

The tree felling mentioned by the Reader was carried out in accordance with the applicable laws, on the basis of two decisions issued to the Bolesławiec District Roads Authority concerning land plots nos. 728/2, 795/2 and 825/1 in Kraśnik Dolny (a district road), and on the basis of an approved notification submitted by a private individual concerning land plots nos. 404 and 405/1, Kraśnik Dolny precinct (the trees grew directly beside the district road, but on the private individual’s plot).

It adds:

The above was the result of a collective petition submitted by residents of this part of the village to the Bolesławiec District Governor (as the authority responsible for the district road). They pointed to a problem recurring for more than a dozen years: trees blown down by the wind and branches breaking off, causing property damage (for example, to property fences) and bringing down the nearby power line, leaving residents without electricity for many hours.

It further explains:

After analysing the material collected in the case, on the basis of the documents held and an on-site inspection, it was determined that the trees posed a safety risk due to their sanitary condition (including deadwood and breaks in the crown), susceptibility to decay, and deviations from the vertical. At the same time, given that the trees formed part of an avenue, the Bolesławiec District Roads Authority was required to carry out replacement plantings, which have in fact already been completed.
