Greenpeace activists have been occupying one of the gigantic machines used to extract lignite at the Turów open-pit mine since the early morning. As we read on greenpeace.org:
Through their peaceful action, they are demanding that Donald Tusk make an unequivocal declaration on ending operations at the open-pit mine and power plant within the next few years. Setting a closure date for Turów must be accompanied by a regional transformation plan that would make it possible to obtain funding for its implementation. Without government action, the region faces collapse and unemployment.
The activists climbed onto a machine as tall as a 13-story apartment building. Banners featuring the likeness of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the slogans “Coal is finished. Prime Minister, take care of the people” and “Just transition now!” appeared on the structure.
What is more, Greenpeace activists have announced that they will continue the protest until they “are certain that their message has reached Prime Minister Donald Tusk”.
