Preliminary findings indicate that a 45-year-old Renault Master driver hit a 64-year-old resident of Karkonoski County who was crossing at a marked pedestrian crossing. The injured woman was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Tests showed that the driver was sober. Police are currently carrying out activities aimed at determining the causes and circumstances of the incident.
The current weather conditions, characteristic of the winter season, significantly increase the risk of road accidents. Low temperatures, darkness, rainfall and localized icy road surfaces mean that both drivers and pedestrians must exercise increased caution.
Police appeal to all road users:
- Drivers: adjust your speed to the road conditions. Even in places where there are no speed limits, remember that a slippery surface and limited visibility can significantly lengthen the braking distance. Particular attention should be paid near pedestrian crossings and at intersections, where the risk of pedestrians suddenly appearing on the roadway is greater.
- Pedestrians: remember that even at a pedestrian crossing, you must make sure that you can cross the roadway safely. Dark clothing makes you less visible, so it is worth wearing reflective elements—especially outside built-up areas.
Each of us, as a road user, is responsible for our own safety and the safety of others. Most of us want to spend the Christmas holiday period with our loved ones—let us ensure that no one has to face the tragedy resulting from a road accident.
Police officers appeal for prudence and compliance with traffic regulations. In difficult road conditions, it is better to spend a few extra minutes reaching your destination than to risk your health and life, as well as those of other road users.
