Last Wednesday, October 6, at around 1:00 p.m., officers from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Wałbrzych, while patrolling the city centre, noticed a man whom they suspected of possessing legally prohibited substances. When he saw the police officers, the man quickly began acting nervously, which raised even greater suspicion that he might have something to hide.
The suspicions proved justified, as officers found drugs on the 39-year-old while carrying out their duties. The resident of Wałbrzych was hiding a plastic bag containing a white powder in his jacket pocket. After weighing and testing it, the secured substance turned out to be nothing other than amphetamine, in an amount equivalent to more than 200 retail portions. The man also had small amounts of hashish on him.
As is usually the case in such situations, the officers went with the man to his place of residence to check whether he was hiding a larger quantity of drugs there.
Instead of substances prohibited by law, the officers found firearms and ammunition while carrying out the specified activities. The officers confirmed that they belonged to the arrested man’s father, with whom he lived. In the basement, the 63-year-old was hiding a gas pistol with a magazine and 85 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, while in the attic there were two types of long firearms: a shotgun and a rifle.
The police determined that the Wałbrzych resident did not have the required permit for the secured firearms and ammunition. During the procedural activities, the 63-year-old claimed that he had found the gas pistol and ammunition in a forest two years earlier, and the other two firearms while renovating the attic.
In accordance with the applicable procedure, the secured firearms and ammunition were placed in police storage.
All the items will now be examined by an expert, and on that basis it will be determined whether they can be returned to their owner.
The court will now decide the fate of those arrested. The 39-year-old faces up to three years in prison for drug-related offences. The 63-year-old, for possessing firearms without the required permit, could be sentenced to as many as eight years in prison.
