During the ceremony on October 19 connected with placing fragments of the blood of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in the Marian Basilica in Bolesławiec, President Piotr Roman said:

What is most cruel for us is that a few days ago information appeared that one of the priest’s murderers had just received a pension increase from 3,000 to 10,000 per month (...) It so happened that, indeed, agents and employees of the Security Office received substantial increases, together with back payments, over the past few months. Why am I talking about this? Because, in my view, this time of honor is needed again.

We searched various sources. No reliable publication says that any of the priest’s murderers receives PLN 10,000 per month. We do know, however, that the president of Bolesławiec often uses X. And indeed, an image containing this false information is circulating on X.

A few days ago, we asked the president’s press spokesperson, Agnieszka Gergont, on what basis Piotr Roman publicly said at the Marian Basilica that one of Father Popiełuszko’s murderers had received a pension increase from PLN 3,000 to PLN 10,000 per month, and where the president had obtained such information? The spokesperson did not answer the question.

It should be added that Piotr Roman was not the only one spreading fake news about pensions. Piotr Gliński, former culture minister in the PiS government, also claimed that the murderers of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko “receive Security Service pensions.” The Ministry of the Interior and Administration confirmed to the tvp.info portal that the information was false. Evidence of this has in fact been available online for several years.
