As Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec reports:

On Thursday morning, information emerged that an individual of a majestic species—the moose—had appeared in the forests around Bolesławiec.

It adds:

For several years, moose have been using the forest areas of Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec as a migration route from southern Europe to the north. Sometimes they spend several days here, and sometimes they stay longer.

Why did the moose come to us דווקא now?

Maciej Krzak, press spokesperson for Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec: – In fact, it is not known how long it has been here or how long it will stay. We can only suspect that its presence is connected with the moose mating season, which falls between mid-September and mid-October. In the jargon, or language, of foresters and naturalists, the mating season is called the rut.

And explains: – Unlike the rut of deer, the moose mating season is not as spectacular. It usually lasts for a shorter time and is less intense in sound. The easiest way to distinguish a bull from a cow is by its antlers, known as palms or tines.

He also emphasizes:

Unfortunately, moose in our area make the news when a vehicle collides with these majestic animals.

A frightened moose runs straight ahead and pays no attention to what is happening at the sides. On the other hand, convinced of its own size, it does not stop when crossing roads.

That is why we are asking all road users to exercise particular caution near the localities of Dobra, Kliczków, Osieczów and Brzeźnik when travelling on roads running through forest complexes. A collision with a moose often ends in its death, while the car is fit only for scrapping. This is caused precisely by the animal’s exceptionally long legs. In a collision with a passenger car, the heaviest part of the moose crashes with full force into the windscreen and roof of the vehicle. In the best-case scenario, the moose has only broken legs and multiple injuries, but there is no moose rehabilitation centre in Poland, so the animal must then be euthanized.
