In Jelenia Góra, an overpass and twelve other streets have been closed. Due to the flood situation, after consulting with the Lower Silesian Superintendent of Education, the city authorities decided to suspend classes at all educational institutions in Jelenia Góra on Monday and Tuesday (16 and 17 September).

The dramatic situation is being worsened by continuous rainfall in Jakuszyce, Szklarska Poręba and Jelenia Góra, which is expected to continue until Monday, 16 September. This is causing the dry reservoirs in Sobieszów and Cieplice to fill further and, consequently, could lead to water overflowing the main dams, potentially flooding streets and properties in Sobieszów and Cieplice.

After 12:00, Jerzy Łużniak, the mayor of Jelenia Góra, personally reported on the situation at the embankment in Sobieszów.

“At 11:00, there was still about 50 cm of reserve capacity at the Sobieszów reservoir,” Mayor Łużniak said in an update at 12:20. “Now the water level is rising and it will essentially overflow the dam crest. I hope the rain stops, because it is primarily this rainfall that is causing water to flow down to us. A break in the rain is forecast from 14:00. This will give us some breathing room and the dam may hold,” the mayor added.
