– Another person from Złotoryja County believed scammers and lost more than PLN 40,000 – reports Sergeant Dominika Kwakszys, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja.
The criminals called the landline. Pretending to be police officers, they reported a road accident allegedly caused by the 71-year-old’s daughter. They convinced the senior woman that, for the crime she had committed, the alleged perpetrator had been put behind bars, but... she could be released after paying bail. The spokeswoman: – The woman believed the story she was told and handed more than PLN 40,000 to an unknown man at her place of residence.
Police:
In view of this situation, we appeal to residents (...) to be cautious! Don’t let yourselves be manipulated and scammed. If you receive a similar call and hear that one of your loved ones has been detained and money is needed for bail, which someone you do not know will come to your home to collect, remember that this may be a scam! Do not act rashly in such a situation. Do not follow the caller’s instructions; end the call and contact someone close to you—a family member or neighbors. Also call the emergency number 112 and report the situation.
And adds: – We also appeal to young people who have older family members. Talk to your parents, grandparents or other family members about scammers’ methods. Tell them what they should do when they hear during a phone call that a loved one has been detained and bail must be paid. Establish a password that will enable seniors to confirm that they are speaking with family, not scammers!
