The swans living at the municipal pond in Bolesławiec have once again failed to have young. Let us recall: two years ago, someone destroyed the eggs and nest. At that time, thanks to the efforts of Mieczysław Żuraw from Klekusiowo, a camera and a footbridge to the islet were installed at the Bolesławiec pond.
A year later, the swans built a nest, but instead of choosing the islet for nesting, they selected a spot among the bushes by the pond’s fence, on the parcel locker side. This time, no one destroyed the nest. The female swan incubated the eggs peacefully, but despite this, none of them hatched. After two months, she finally abandoned the nest.
This year is similar. At the end of April, the female swan laid several eggs and began incubating them in the same place as before. The incubation period for mute swans is approximately 35 days. After a month and a half, there should already be young. Unfortunately, in the case of our swans, one month passed, then two, and again nothing hatched from the eggs. After two months, the female swan began leaving the nest more and more often and staying away from it for increasingly longer periods. She has now abandoned it for good.
Why can’t the pair of swans have young?
There are many indications that this pair of swans simply cannot have offspring. Both this year and last year, the eggs were probably unfertilized and contained no embryos. This may explain why nothing hatched from them.
