On the social media profile of Michał Sudoł, a councillor on the Nowogrodziec Municipal Council who was re-elected, this time running with the committee of mayor-elect Joanna Świder, a post appeared under the telling title “The Generous Outgoing Mayor”:
I had a feeling that the mayor, who suffered a decisive defeat in the 7 April election, would want to show that he could still do something. He can—but what purpose is it meant to serve? Voters indicated the directions for the municipality’s development by electing Joanna Świder as mayor. However, the outgoing mayor wants to forcibly leave his toys behind and orders the new Municipal Council and the new mayor to play with them.
At today’s session of the Municipal Council, a raise in councillors’ allowances is to be considered, among other matters. Post-election generosity—or a pre-election promise to his own candidates? Why should the old Council set the allowances for the new Municipal Council?
He added:
A very worrying fact is the number of changes to the 2024 budget. Suddenly, investments worth PLN 5 million appeared in the budget! These include the construction of community centers in Milików and Gierałtów. To be clear, I am not questioning the legitimacy of the investments, but rather the way they were introduced into the budget.
After the election, the outgoing mayor should spend his time cleaning out his office and thanking his colleagues, rather than drawing up a work plan for the new mayor and the Municipal Council.
And he summed it up forcefully:
You have to know when to leave the stage. To leave with the dignity befitting a local government official with more than 20 years of experience—or perhaps I am mistaken.
Maybe it would be better to keep behaving as always, like a child whose toys have been taken away?
