As we read on the social media profile of Michał Sudoł, a councillor of the Nowogrodziec Municipal Council:
As I previously announced, I undertook efforts to commemorate Mr Stanisław Chomontowicz, the first headmaster of the school in Nowogrodziec.
The result of these efforts is an informational and commemorative plaque installed on Stanisław Chomontowicz Street. Few residents know that such a street has existed for several decades. However, since it was established, it had never been marked. In the past, this street looked different. It ran from Kolejowa Street, along the fence of the kindergarten and the old sports hall, to the school building. Today, it is the entrance to the car park and part of the car park.
The councillor explains:
The idea of commemorating Stanisław Chomontowicz had been maturing in me for several years. I believe that the first headmaster deserves to be remembered by the city’s residents.
And he adds:
In addition to the street name, I placed a short note on the plaque:
Stanisław Chomontowicz (1913–1948)
Education pioneer, first headmaster of the school in Nowogrodziec. He came to Nowogrodziec from Kovel (now Ukraine), bringing knowledge, hope and commitment to the emerging community. Stanisław Chomontowicz had a pedagogical and musical education, which is why he undertook the difficult task of organising educational life in the devastated city.Despite the post-war chaos, he managed to organise a Polish school in Nowogrodziec, using the buildings of two former German schools for this purpose: a Catholic one and an Evangelical one.
Preserved documents describe his high competence and dedication to his work.
He died tragically on 1 October 1948—he was murdered while carrying out his official duties, returning from Bolesławiec with pay for the teachers.
He rests in the cemetery in Nowogrodziec.
