– The duty officer at the Zgorzelec police station received information that a car which had just been stolen was driving along one of the roads toward Zgorzelec – reports Commissioner Agnieszka Goguł, press officer for the local KPP.
According to the report, the owner of the BMW was trying to start his vehicle in a car park in Lubań County. The spokeswoman said: – At that time, a man riding a bicycle passed by and offered his help.
The cyclist told the driver that he was not strong enough to push the car, but offered to get behind the wheel. When the BMW was started, the “helpful” cyclist simply drove away in it. Commissioner A. Goguł:
The BMW owner and his acquaintances followed him while simultaneously notifying the Zgorzelec police.
The thief reached one of the localities in the Pieńsk municipality, where he skidded. He then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. When the police arrived at the scene, they already had a description of the perpetrator. After a short pursuit, the “helper” was arrested.
He turned out to be a 30-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County, known to the police from previous proceedings. The spokeswoman said:
A breathalyzer and drug test showed that the man was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamine. In addition, he did not have a driving licence and had drugs in his pocket.
The outcome? The BMW was returned to its owner, while the suspect was taken to the KPP in Lubań. The 30-year-old now faces up to five years in prison.
