The incident occurred in autumn 2022. – As officers established, on November 10, while on an individual hunt in a forest complex in Piechowice, the man deliberately and without justification shot a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog worth PLN 3,000 – reported last year by junior inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer for the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters.
She added: – The hunter, who was sitting in a hunting stand, noticed the dog running around after it had briefly moved away from its owner, and then shot it.
The police emphasized at the time:
The dog posed no threat – either to animals or to people.
Moreover, when the 70-year-old heard the dog’s owner calling for his pet, he put the animal’s body in his car and then dumped it near a river. It was found there.
The case was described in detail by the lwowecki.info service:
Our sources already indicated at the time that the hunter had crossed every boundary.
“In 2011, the Animal Protection Act was amended. It once allowed a shot to be fired only when a dog was attacking game. Today, a dog may only be captured, and our network of shelters and animal-protection organizations is developed enough that one phone call would have resolved the matter. I am a dog owner myself, and in this case there is no justification for the hunter,” an anonymous hunter told us.
According to the Lwówek-based outlet, the hunter in question received a very lenient sentence in April last year. He was fined… PLN 2,000. The Jelenia Góra prosecutor’s office appealed. The result? Lwowecki.info:
The man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for a two-year probation period, ordered to pay PLN 10,000 to the Society for the Care of Animals, and banned from engaging in hunting-related activities for five years. The court also ordered that the judgment be made public.
