Last Sunday afternoon, police officers responded to a report that the driver of a Volkswagen Transporter was probably intoxicated. In the parking lot of one of Jelenia Góra’s supermarkets, the man nearly hit a pedestrian while parking the vehicle, and when the pedestrian drew his attention to it, he began insulting him. A female passenger was travelling in the car with the driver, and the man then went shopping with her.

When the officers arrived at the scene, the vehicle was leaving the parking lot, but it turned out that the woman was now behind the wheel and the man was the passenger. The officers stopped the driver for inspection and discovered that the people travelling in the vehicle were a married couple. A strong smell of alcohol was clearly detectable from both of them. The test showed nearly 2 per mille of alcohol in the man’s system and more than 1 per mille in the woman’s. In addition, it turned out during the proceedings that the 71-year-old man did not have a driving licence, while his wife’s licence had been suspended.

The senior couple will now face court proceedings for driving a vehicle while intoxicated. They could face up to two years in prison, a driving ban and a substantial financial penalty.
