Readers did not let the matter go. We wrote about the two holes that drivers had to avoid so they would not damage their cars in an article from December 10 Who cut... two holes in the new road for drivers? Six days later, a reader wrote to us:
I have a question concerning your article about the holes in the new asphalt at the corner of Łasicka and Żeromskiego streets. Has it been established which company made these holes? Have you received a response from the County Roads Authority? The holes have been patched, but in a typical slapdash manner. It looks downright awful. Was there a commitment to restore the street to its previous condition?
The County Roads Authority in Bolesławiec responded to our inquiry.
The road surface was cut as a result of a water-supply network failure (this was not done by the PWiK company—editor’s note). The excavations were filled with aggregate level with the roadway; however, weather conditions did not allow the roadway to be secured with mineral-asphalt mix. The contractor was informed of the need to complete the work as soon as possible or to maintain the roadway in a condition that did not pose a risk to traffic safety.

On December 19, 2023, the holes were still filled with aggregate and marked with traffic cones. As we learned from another source, the cutting of holes in the recently completed road surface may, but need not, have been necessitated by the need to restore street valve boxes previously asphalted over by the contractor Brugbud. Renovating more than a kilometer of streets, including sidewalks on both sides, cost 1,600,000 złoty. The holes come free of charge, so perhaps that is why they were made without much care.
