On Sunday afternoon, a man called the landline of Bolesławiec seniors and said in a tearful voice: “Grandma, we’ve had an accident.” Then the phone was taken by the victim, who heard a similar message. Bolesławiec police: – The senior thought that his son was calling, so he continued the conversation, during which he learned that the caller had knocked down a pregnant woman and that money was needed to secure his release.

The officers add:

The fake son then said that he would hand the phone to a policewoman and told him not to end the call on the landline. A woman called the mobile number and asked how much cash the victim had at home. When she received the answer, she said it was not enough. The Bolesławiec resident said that he also had gold jewelry. He then heard that he should pack everything and hand it over to a courier, who would soon appear outside the victims’ home.

The seniors handed the courier both their savings and jewelry. After some time, the deceived man called his son to ask whether help had arrived in time. The son, however, denied that he had been involved in any accident.

Police emphasize: – In the last days of October, two other seniors from Bolesławiec heard a similar story. That time, a woman collected the money, while a man came for the package.

The officers warn against giving money to strangers:

Scammers very often use the same story involving a pregnant woman being knocked down. We remind you of 4 rules for senior safety:

  1. Never hand money to a stranger.
  2. Never call numbers provided by the caller.
  3. Call your loved ones and ask whether they really need help.
  4. Immediately notify the Police of an attempted fraud.
