The mushroom, which belongs to the agaric family, has a distinctive, elongated cap. It has gills beneath the cap. The mushroom is suitable for eating as long as it is completely white on the outside and inside (when the cap is cut open). When it starts turning gray and black, it is no longer fit to eat.

The shaggy ink cap grows both in forests and in parks, meadows, lawns, alongside roads... It is common, including in urban green spaces.
