I noticed that some of the old trees growing at the bend of the regional road between Łaziska and Warta Bolesławiecka had been cut down. These trees are—or rather, were—as healthy as could be. Could you check who issued such a decision and on what grounds? What was the justification? Why was precisely this particular section of trees removed, even though in winter they provide excellent protection for the road against drifting snow? Will new trees be planted in their place?

Joanna Jarocka, spokesperson for the Dolnośląska Służba Dróg i Kolei, explains that the felling was carried out at the request of the mayor of Warta Bolesławiecka, Mirosław Haniszewski. “A letter from the mayor arrived on 18 December last year,” Jarocka explains. The document states:

The Mayor of Warta Bolesławiecka Municipality, at the request of residents of Warta Bolesławiecka Municipality, asks that action be taken to remove 15 poplar trees […] growing on the bend of Regional Road No. 363 in Warta Bolesławiecka, due to the threat they pose to people and property, as well as to road traffic safety.

The trees in question, growing within the regional road right-of-way, are in poor biological condition and have entered the aging phase; they are brittle, and dry branches fall onto the roadway, posing a threat to traffic. Moreover, because of the location where they grow, they have been a factor in numerous car accidents, including fatal ones.

“The request received a positive assessment from our field inspector, who determined that the stand was damaged,” emphasizes the DSDIK spokesperson. “The poplars were old, and during strong winds many broken branches landed on the road. The trees as a whole, also because of their age, posed a risk of falling and had to be cut down.”
