Below is an interview with Carmen Leyte, who visited Bolesławiec to take part in the ceremony celebrating the presentation of the Europe Prize to the city.
Boleslawianie.eu: We are planning the first Equality March for LGBT people in Bolesławiec. What do you think about it?
Carmen Leyte: It is a good idea. We stand for it—including myself—as does the party I represent and, of course, the Council of Europe: we defend people’s rights regarding sexual orientation and the choices they make. Naturally, we support people who want to defend these rights and people such as LGBT people.
Do you think it is right to organize a march in such a small town as Bolesławiec?
Yes, I think it is good, because when you defend what you believe in peacefully, you have the right to do so, and it is a way to present this issue and bring it to the attention of more people. You cannot force anyone, but you can always show your ideas and defend them peacefully.
Could you say something kind to the people organizing the Equality March?
Well, I think it is good that they decided to do it, and I encourage people to participate, regardless of whether they support this option or not, simply in order to support citizens who want to join this march freely in defense of the rights of LGBT people. So yes, I think we should support this option, because it defends the rights of part of our population, and that is always important.
