Criminal investigators detained a 31-year-old resident of Jelenia Góra suspected of filing a false report of a crime. Sub-Inspector Edyta Bagrowska from KMP Jelenia Góra:

As officers established, at the end of June this year, the man reported the theft of property belonging to him. According to the report, his mobile phone and smartwatch had been stolen. He estimated the resulting losses at more than PLN 5,000.

After verifying the information provided by the person making the report and analyzing surveillance footage, police determined that the report was false. What is more, it came to light that the “clever” 31-year-old had not been robbed at all. He had pawned the aforementioned items at a pawnshop himself. He then reported the matter to the police, hoping to receive compensation.

Reporting a crime that was never committed is punishable by up to two years in prison.
