On the Ministry of Digital Affairs’ social media profile, a warning appeared:
First there was the doll that won the hearts of girls around the world. Then came the box-office film starring Margot Robbie. (The movie has already grossed more than $780 million worldwide (data from Sunday, July 30) – ed. istotne.pl). Finally came “Barbie mania,” and the internet was flooded with photos transforming people into the famous toy.
The ministry adds:
Photo filters are nothing new – there have already been pictures with dog ears and apps allowing users to “age” themselves by several decades. Now, with a single click, we can transform ourselves into Barbie or Ken.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs warns, however, that this seemingly innocent pastime is in fact an operation to collect internet users’ data on a mass scale.
Two apps are available online: barbieselfie.ai and bairbie.me – both pose a major threat to our data.
And explains:
By accepting the privacy policy of the barbieselfie.ai service, we grant access to:
- the smartphone camera
- payment history
- GPS location history
- registration data
- precise technical smartphone data
- data on the user’s engagement on social media
- information about interactions with other services
- data from surveys and competitions.
It also emphasizes: – The bairbie.me app does not meet the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Parliament and of the Council (EU) on the protection of personal data – so we do not know what information is being taken over or what it will be used for.
And adds: – Let’s be careful what we click on and stay safe online.
