The Municipal Public Library – Knowledge Centre in Bolesławiec invites you on a sentimental journey through the former Eastern Borderlands! We will travel across the present-day territories of Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania, which before World War II were home to many people who later settled in Bolesławiec and the surrounding area. Our guide will be Paweł Ochman, creator of the popular Weganon blog. He will talk about the culinary traditions of the Eastern Borderlands, mainly those of the interwar period. Thanks to the men and women from the Borderlands and their descendants, we know what was eaten every day and on special occasions before the war, are familiar with the vegetables that reigned in kitchens at the time, and have insight into ways of using wild fruits and herbs.
So what are Volhynian kichyłki, Polesian kulaga, Lithuanian mandryki or Gródek cebulniki? What lies behind names such as towkanica, Volodymyr fajercarze, Lviv bałabuchy or kryżawki? We will discuss all this on 28 July 2023 at 6:00 p.m., during a meeting with the author of the book “Plant-Based Cuisine of the Borderlands”.
Everyone is welcome! Admission is free.
The meeting will be interpreted into Ukrainian.
