A resident reported the theft of a bicycle to the Lubań County Police Headquarters. The stolen bicycle had been left by the victim’s grandson in front of the entrance to a parking lot belonging to one of the housing communities. The woman estimated the value of the lost bicycle at PLN 1,500.
To reconstruct the course of events, criminal investigators from Lubań reviewed local surveillance footage, which captured the moment the bicycle was stolen. The man’s image, visible in the recording, was recognized by the police officer working on the case as that of a county resident. The lead proved correct, as officers found the stolen property at the thief’s place of residence. The man confessed to the theft and now faces a sentence of up to 5 years in prison.
Let us remember that the security of our property largely depends on us. Police officers take this opportunity to remind us of the basic safety rules. Above all, do not leave bicycles unattended. If we are on a bicycle trip and need to go into a shop, for example, one person should stay with the bicycles while the other does the shopping.
When we have to leave our bicycle in a public place for a longer period, we should use a professional bicycle lock. Security devices costing a dozen or so złoty are not much of a challenge for long metal-cutting shears and break within a few seconds. By contrast, using certified locks made of hardened metal and high-carbon steel, with cold-forged links, is always a good solution. A salesperson at a good bicycle shop will certainly advise us on the appropriate one.
