The incident occurred on Friday, 20 January, at around 1:30 p.m., at a Lotos fuel station on Daszyńskiego Street in Zgorzelec. One of the tanks exploded. As reported by zgorzelec.info:
(...) the force of the explosion was so immense that the body of the worker who died damaged the building’s roof.
The State Fire Service Provincial Headquarters in Wrocław reported on the incident:
The explosion occurred during ongoing work, after maintenance had been completed, inside an empty underground petrol tank.
Twelve fire service units took part in the operation, including the Operational Group of the Lower Silesian Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service, the district State Fire Service commander from Zgorzelec, and the Chemical and Ecological Rescue Specialist Group from the State Fire Service Municipal Headquarters in Legnica.
