On the Monday before Christmas (19 December), the eyes of all Poland were turned toward Siecieborzyce—a small locality in Żagań County. In the early morning, a 31-year-old woman tried to open a parcel addressed to her in the kitchen of her home. An unknown person had previously left it in front of her house. When the package was opened, it exploded with enormous force, seriously injuring the woman and her two children, aged 3 and 7, who were nearby. Medics began a fight for their health and lives. At the same time, investigators worked to clarify the circumstances of this shocking incident.

During numerous activities carried out at the scene, officers examined the site of the explosion and secured several dozen traces confirming the detonation of an explosive device. Expert analyses are currently being conducted, including in the fields of fingerprint examination, forensic track analysis, biology and chemistry. The most experienced officers from Lubusz also worked to solve the case. They included law-enforcement officers from many police divisions and units—mainly criminal investigators, investigative officers and forensic technicians. The participation of officers from the Police Headquarters, coordinating international cooperation, was also extremely important.

The procedural and operational activities carried out in the case, after careful analysis, justified the suspicion that the person who might have been involved in constructing and planting the device was the woman’s former partner—a 34-year-old resident of Żagań County with whom she was in conflict. His place of residence was searched. At the time the activities were conducted, the man was outside the country. A number of people were interviewed in the case, and their statements confirmed the conflict between the parties.

On 28 December 2022, based on the evidence collected in the case, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zielona Góra issued a decision to bring charges against the 34-year-old: under Article 13 §1 of the Penal Code in conjunction with Article 148 §2(4) of the Penal Code and other provisions, namely attempted murder of multiple people using an explosive device. It also issued a decision ordering the suspect to be sought, detained and forcibly brought before the authorities. At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, on 4 January the District Court in Zielona Góra ordered the suspect’s temporary detention.

The investigators’ activities made it possible to establish the suspect’s whereabouts. On Monday (16 January), in Lower Silesian Voivodeship (in Łagów near Zgorzelec—the editor’s note.), police officers detained the suspect in an operation prepared in advance. Officers responsible for searching for and identifying people, as well as officers from the Independent Counter-Terrorist Police Subunit of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Gorzów Wielkopolski, took part in the operation. Criminal investigators and investigative officers were also involved in the detention.

Further evidence is currently being gathered. The case is being handled by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zielona Góra, Investigative Division I, which has already brought charges against the man for attempted murder of multiple people using an explosive device. The 34-year-old faces life imprisonment.
