She had found money and expired payment cards left at one of the city transport stops – reports junior inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer for the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters. – After the cash was counted, it turned out that it amounted to tens of thousands of złoty in Polish and foreign currency.

The officers found the owner of the money. The spokeswoman said: – While returning from shopping, the woman inadvertently left all her savings at the bus stop because, as it turned out, when leaving home she always took them with her for fear of theft.

The honest finder received a finder’s reward for returning the lost property.

Police remind the public:

“Finders keepers” is just a saying, because taking someone else’s property found by chance for oneself is punishable.

Anyone who finds someone else’s property is required, within two weeks of finding it, to notify the Police, for example, or, by another available means, to seek its owner. A finder may avoid liability for this conduct, despite not notifying the Police or the appropriate authority, if they take appropriate steps to search for the owner. For example, they may post an advertisement online or in the press, or put up their own notice in public places where this is appropriate (noticeboards in parks, advertising columns, etc.).

Remember: By failing to return found property, we appropriate it. If the value of the property does not exceed PLN 500, this constitutes a petty offense. If its value exceeds PLN 500, criminal liability for committing an offense applies.
