Gdańska Street in Bolesławiec is an interesting case. It is one of those roads—apparently not the only one in the City of Ceramics!—that suddenly narrow sharply right at the end. This causes numerous dangerous situations on the road.

The worst is when two trucks try to pass each other on the aforementioned narrowest section. Or a truck and a bus. Then, to avoid a collision, one of the drivers has to drive onto the pavement. And pedestrians have to flee into the nearby woods.

We measured it. The road on Gdańska Street at the Żabka store is 7.18 metres wide; at the boulevard along the Bóbr River, it is already 6.25 metres. At the very end, it is only… 5.25 metres. That means it is almost two metres narrower.

The result? Broken-off mirrors and scrapes. The road surface itself—the paving stones—does not improve the situation, to put it mildly. As drivers admit, when it gets cold, this section becomes devilishly slippery.

The matter is serious because several companies have their headquarters at the end of Gdańska Street, including one of the best-known manufacturers of Bolesławiec ceramics. What is more, this section is often used by people travelling to visit their loved ones at the municipal cemetery.

A light at the end of the tunnel?

As we have learned, the District Roads Authority is planning to reconstruct Gdańska Street, although for now only on the section from the intersection with Garncarska to Śluzowa Street. A tender for this project should be announced later this year. Reconstruction of the further section of Gdańska Street is also planned, but it is not known when it will take place. What is known, however, is that when the project finally gets under way, the outdated paving stones will disappear and be replaced with an asphalt surface.
