As reported by the Henryk Sucharski Comprehensive and Vocational Schools in Bolesławiec:

The title of the project, “Can You Save a Life?”, clearly indicated that the project activities would focus on providing first aid and promoting behaviours that protect life and health. Therefore, while carrying out a variety of activities, we paid great attention to safety. In view of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the project’s subject matter was important and relevant to the young people from Ukraine, while the ability to provide first aid is necessary for everyone.

The school adds:

During the seven days of the project, the young people demonstrated great commitment. They assembled equipment for first-aid kits and took part in workshops conducted by paramedics cooperating with the Wspierajmy Zdrowie Foundation. They learned how to respond in various life-threatening situations and practised resuscitation and wound bandaging. At the end, they received certificates confirming that they had acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills in providing first aid.

Furthermore, the students visited the “Baryt” Search and Rescue Unit in Stanisławów near Złotoryja, where members of the Association of Former Soldiers of the 62nd Special “Commando” Company told the young people about the rescue operations they conduct. On the unit’s grounds, the young people had the opportunity to eat military-style bigos in combat conditions.

Project participants also:

  • Expanded their knowledge of geography, physics and chemistry at the Sudeten Educational Farm.
  • In the laboratory, they carried out experiments involving water, fire and gas.
  • In Lipiany—the “Village of Flavours”—they learned to prepare a Balkan dish known as pita.

Moreover, young people from Zbaraż performed a half-hour concert on stage during Bolesławiec Days, while young people from Bolesławiec supported members of the Society of Friends of Lviv and the South-Eastern Borderlands in preparing the décor of a pavilion presenting the society’s achievements and handicrafts brought by the young people from Zbaraż.

Together, the students raised funds to help Ukraine in its fight. The school reported: – During Settlers’ Day and at a fair organised at ZSOiZ, they raised PLN 2,413 and EUR 100.

Kevin, one of the project participants, assessed the initiative as follows at the end:

With the passage of time, I have come to appreciate many things. The friends who came to us from Ukraine became more than just acquaintances. I can confidently say that we became a small family. Every day we spent together was a new life lesson that we could experience together, and that was something special—many wonderful moments, so much joy… It is difficult for me to describe how happy I am now that I was able to take part in this project. For me, it was something beautiful. Something changed inside me. I also began to look differently at what is happening in the world. Previously, I was neutral when it came to what was happening beyond our border. Now I know that helping our neighbouring brothers and sisters from Ukraine is something that should be our priority!
