A Bolesławiec resident sent us photos of the tree trunk at 2 Wańkowicza Street. In her opinion, someone is poisoning the plant because they want to get rid of the magnificent tree:
Someone is trying to destroy this beautiful, enormous tree at the end of the street. It was doused and apparently set on fire. Is the administrator of this area doing anything about it? The psychopath probably lives in one of those two new blocks, because who else could it bother, so locating and punishing the perpetrator should not be a problem. The other trees on this property were also probably watered with some kind of poison; I had previously seen yellow, eaten-away patches around them.
We asked Irena Dul of Walor, the administrator of both buildings and the surrounding area, about the matter:
None of the property owners reported vandalism. We will inspect the tree on site, and if we suspect what the person reporting the problem described, I will notify the County Police Headquarters in order to find the perpetrator of the prohibited act. None of the owners reported a need to remove the tree.
For now, there is no expert assessment of the substance. Could it perhaps be some secretion from the tree, or is someone actually watering the plant with a poisonous liquid?
Algae may also be responsible for the rusty coating on the tree trunks. In that case, it is neither a tree disease nor any threat to it. A year ago, we described a similar situation on Gdańska Street in Bolesławiec.
