In October last year, we wrote that the long-awaited renovation of Zabobrze Street was getting under way. The work was scheduled to be completed at the end of 2010. – Now it turns out that the earliest realistic date is June 2011 – says Mr Stanisław regretfully Mr Stanisław, a resident of Zabobrze Street.

The street is in a deplorable condition. – All it takes is some rain. Then the mud is knee-deep – says the Bolesławiec resident. – Someone who wants to drive along this route says that you can tear off your bumpers and undercarriages here.

The man admits that getting there is troublesome, but the residents of Zabobrze somehow manage. The problem is that the Bolesławiec Water Supply and Sewerage Company wants to completely close the section of the street from building no. 138 to building no. 166. On Wednesday, 19 May, PWiK representatives distributed invitations to an information meeting concerning the road closure. Representatives of the Bolesławiec city authorities, PWiK and the company carrying out the sewerage works in Zabobrze will attend the meeting. Local residents will then be able to “learn about the details and dates of the road closure and submit their comments on the matter.”

– It is known that there is renovation work going on. Somehow we get to our properties over these bumps. We use the side streets – Mr Stanisław stresses. – Now the situation will change radically. A decision has been made to close a several-hundred-metre section. Neither entry nor exit will be possible.

For now, it is also unknown how long this section of Zabobrze will be closed. Residents fear that the work may take as many as 20 days. – Small children live here; they go to nursery school and school. One boy travels to the hospital for dialysis. We will not agree to a complete closure – Mr Stanisław says firmly. – We will protest.

Update: 2010-05-21 20:00

On Friday (21 May), representatives of the city office, PWiK and the contractor responsible for replacing the sewerage and water-supply networks met with residents of Zabobrze Street. Most complaints concerned the condition of the two roads connecting Zabobrze Street with II Armii Wojska Polskiego Street, at the level of the closed section of Zabobrze Street. Residents use these roads to leave or reach their properties. During the meeting, people called for the temporary roads to be reinforced and their potholes repaired for the duration of the renovation. The city authorities promised that crushed stone would be spread on the roads. Deputy Mayor Wiesław Ogrodnik explained that the planned work had been delayed, among other things, by the prolonged winter. He also mentioned the bus stop for public transport, which had been moved from Zabobrze to II Armii Wojska Polskiego Street, near Podkowa Restaurant. The deputy mayor also announced that a pedestrian crossing would be built near the new stop.

When will the renovation end?

The residents of Zabobrze must arm themselves with patience. The replacement of the sewerage and water-supply networks on the closed section is scheduled to be completed in July this year. The new surface along the entire length of Zabobrze Street will not be opened for use until June 2011.
