Officers: – False advertisements guaranteeing supposedly very high and certain profits appear mainly on social media and websites. They most often encourage people to invest in company shares and investment projects.
A resident of Ząbkowice County fell victim to this kind of manipulation. – The man found an offer online to purchase a package of Orlen shares. The investment was supposed to end with a large profit in a short time. Encouraged by the advertisement, he filled out an application form, providing his details along with his telephone number – reports Staff Sergeant Paweł Noga from the press team of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – On 25 July, a woman contacted the 74-year-old and offered shares in the fuel company after he paid PLN 1,000 into an account. The resident of Ząbkowice County transferred the money and waited.
How do the criminals operate?
Several days later, a man called the victim and introduced himself as a customer adviser. The spokesperson: – He persuaded the unsuspecting 74-year-old to install the AnyDesk program on his phone and send data from his identity card along with a photograph. He then asked whether the man knew how to transfer investment profits to his account and offered to transfer 10 dollars to him to check whether everything was in order.
The “investor” agreed and waited for the transfer. During this time, he logged into his account, but no money came in. The quasi-adviser stated that there were technical problems and that they would try again the next day.
He called on 29 July and again asked whether the money was in the man’s account, thereby forcing him to log in again. The money was still not there. Staff Sergeant P. Noga: – The 74-year-old became suspicious and transferred some of the funds accumulated in his account to his wife’s account.
As it turned out, rightly so. The next day, the senior was contacted by an employee of his bank, who asked about the transfers from his account. It emerged that the fraudster, using data obtained through deception, had made several transfers totalling PLN 14,600.
Officers:
We once again appeal for common sense and caution. If we want to invest, let us first read about how to do so safely. The Orlen concern has also published a “warning against fraudsters” on its website, explaining how to invest without being deceived. At the same time, we warn people never to install programs requested by strangers or provide them with logins and passwords for online banking.
