As reported by the Legnica Special Economic Zone:
This agreement continues activities launched at the beginning of June 2022. At that time, the same companies signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the development of SMRs (short for Small Modular Reactors) for industrial plants. SMR technology is new to Poland’s energy sector. However, experts predict that in the coming years, due to high energy prices, limited availability of capacity in the electricity grid and the availability of fossil fuels, the development of and interest in nuclear reactors among companies will intensify.
– There has been extensive discussion of the global problems caused by energy shortages. Potential investors are increasingly experiencing difficulties obtaining the amounts of energy and gas they need. The new solution could provide a safe, stable and zero-emission energy source for factories located in the Zone. We are taking another step not only toward green energy, but also toward strengthening energy security – said Przemysław Bożek, president of the Legnica Special Economic Zone.
More about the investor
Last Energy is an American investor, developer and operator of small modular nuclear power plants. The fully scalable design developed by Last Energy provides zero-emission energy at a competitive price, enabling the acceleration of the economy’s decarbonization process.
– Poland is one of the first countries in which Last Energy plans to deploy its SMR technology. We are pleased that the Legnica Special Economic Zone has expressed interest in our technology, as well as its willingness to sign a long-term contract for the purchase of the energy produced. Ahead of us is the process of identifying potential locations, followed by confirmation of the project assumptions. The cooperation being developed is intended to increase energy security for Polish industry and society – said Damian Jamroz, president of Last Energy Polska.
– DB Energy has entered into a trilateral agreement with Last Energy and the Legnica Special Economic Zone concerning participation in the construction and integration process for 10 small nuclear reactors with a total electrical capacity of 200 MW within the Zone. Our investment will provide businesses in the Zone with a zero-emission and stable energy source. Small nuclear power plants, particularly those manufactured by our partner Last Energy, are the future for large enterprises on their path to zero emissions – added Dominik Brach, president of DB Energy.
Where exactly will the reactors be built?
This is currently being determined, as the LSSE spokesperson informed us. We will return to the subject.
