As soldiers from the Bolesławiec Bomb Disposal Patrol of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment report:

Sometimes, while diving, swimming or bathing, kayaking or rafting on a lake, in the sea, in a river, or in a flooded quarry or gravel pit, we may find (or notice) an object resembling unexploded ordnance (an explosive object of military origin, such as an artillery shell, hand grenade, mortar shell, aerial bomb, rocket projectile, mine, etc.).

What should you do if you find unexploded ordnance (or an object resembling it) in the water?

Bomb disposal specialists:

  1. Do not touch such objects.
  2. Remember the location where it was found. (In the case of divers and scuba divers—if possible, surface and mark the location with a buoy).
  3. Report it by calling the emergency number 112 or the police.

If possible, we can:

  • take a photograph,
  • read the coordinates (or mark the location on Google Maps—“drop a pin”),
  • remember the object’s size and shape.

The uniformed officers explain: — When this report reaches us and the object is beyond our capabilities (it is too deep), we notify the Diver-Miner Group (in our case, from Świnoujście), who will remove the explosive object or retrieve it from underwater and hand it over to us for neutralization.

They also warn:

You should be aware that explosives used in military technology are, in practice, completely resistant to weather conditions and retain their explosive properties regardless of their production date.

Let us recall. Recently, we reported on such an intervention by our bomb disposal specialists in the article They found a rocket projectile in the Bóbr River during a kayaking trip.
